Timing and Time Management
Have you ever done everything in your power to meet a goal that you set, only to find out that the timing was off? You’re not alone. Placing your vision in time is one of the biggest challenges in business and here’s the reason why. Business people operate on multiple time clocks.
Whether you work for a Fortune 500 company or you’re a mompreneur, time has probably gotten the best of you. You have to manage internal deadlines, promises made to clients, not to mention the spaces when you’re waiting for someone else to complete their tasks so that you can move on with your own. Combine all of these forces with the ones that I haven’t even touched on, and you have a serious time crunch on your hands. And then there is timing. Timing is a bit different from a time crunch. In fact, the wrong timing can actually create a time crunch.
Timing is the rhythm of business. Take advantage of the right opportunity at the wrong time and you may end up paying a heavy price tag. Adding a new project to the 157 other items on your agenda may just be the one thing to push you over the edge. Talk to a team member about a sensitive issue before they are ready to open up and you may find yourself in a war of words. Oh what a tangled timing web we weave.
If you lack time for yourself and the things that are most important in life, I have just the person for you. His name is Brett Owens, co-founder of Chrometa. A graduate of Cornell University, Brett is an expert in time management and employee productivity and is currently focused on the application of operations research techniques to help organizations and people manage time more effectively.
In the next week or so, we will present the first part of Brett’s series “An Entrepreneurial Approach to Time Management.” And believe me, it is worth reading over and over. Brett explains time management in a way that helped me to understand why I sometimes feel guilty at the end of the day when I don’t finish all the tasks on my list. If you’re searching for a flexible way to manage your time, stay tuned to hear more from Brett Owens.

For actual time management, I find that outlook + a blackberry works the best, outlook is a single tool that can manage all of your workload in the one single place, all of your scheduling, tasks, and information in one place. When it is sync’ed with a blackberry you can have all of your information available to you when you are mobile as well, with the advantage of effective mobile email.
