Keep An Eye on Your Influencers – Experience Entrepreneurship 2009
Who are you? No really. If you’re unsure, you’re not alone. It’s difficult to separate who you really are from who you aspire to be. A good way to gauge who you are and determine if you’re on track to realizing your true potential is to step back and take a good look at the people you spend the most time with. These people are called your influencers. And by design or default, they will ultimately determine the decisions you make and resolutions that you keep. Your influencers have a say in whether your choose to try new things and what new things you try.
Entrepreneurship is largely about opportunity and innovation. It’s all about experiencing and interacting with great ideas. And I think everyone with an entrepreneurial spirit has experienced discouragement when it comes to trying new things. Let me just go on record as saying that influencers don’t usually intend to shoot holes in your dreams unless they’ve taken Gunslinging 101. They just speak out of their personal and professional experience (or lack their of).
The challenge comes in when you’re left processing what they’ve shared with you. This is a tedious process and the person with the stronger influence will usually sway your decision. That’s why it’s important to know who has the most influence in your life. Then decide if where they are lines up with where you want to be. If not, you may find yourself making a few changes to your social circle. But before you make the decision to get rid of old friends or change professional circles, be sure to understand exactly how each fits into your life…
